The creator of SpongeBob Squarepants was once a marine biologist
Stephen Hillenburg first came up with the idea for SpongeBob back in 1984 while teaching and studying marine biology at what is now the Orange County Ocean Institute. While at school, Hillenburg developed a love of animation and produced his own comic book called The Intertidal Zone. The co-host of the comic, “Bob the Sponge,” originally resembled an actual sea sponge much more closely than he does now!

Flash Game: Live Your Own High Fidelity With Recordshop Tycoon
Gone are the days when tiny mom-and-pop record stores could thrive. Actually, stores like Virgin Megastore have closed as well due to the overwhelming amount of online music sales (and “borrowing”) in the past 10 years or so. You can finally live out your own High Fidelity dreams with Recordshop Tycoon, an online Flash game that puts you in the shoes of a record store owner.
Recordshop Tycoon is pretty similar to games like FarmVille. It’s pretty simple — graphics-wise and story-wise. The game starts out with you in the poor part of town in a decaying shack, which is all you can afford for your startup business.
There are three main parts of the game. First, Office Mode is where you set prices, track your results, and buy stock. Building Mode is where you actually put your shop together. And last, Daily Mode, which is where the real magic happens. Customers come into your shop, interact with you, and rant or rave about your prices. The store only sells CDs (not actual vinyl records), and you have to get to know your clientele. Each person will only like one genre (pop, urban, dance, classic, and indie), so you have to find out what genres are most popular with your customers.
You progress from a tiny hole-in-the-wall store, to mega warehouse store, and like any game where you build something from the ground up, this one is sure to be addicting. Maybe this is your chance to turn down a customer looking to buy “I Just Called to Say I Love You.”

Documentary: The End of God?: A Horizon Guide to Science and Religion

As the Pope ends his visit to Britain, historian Dr Thomas Dixon delves into the BBC’s archive to explore the troubled relationship between religion and science. From the creationists of America to the physicists of the Large Hadron Collider, he traces the expansion of scientific knowledge and asks whether there is still room for God in the modern world.
The relationship between science and religion has been long and troubled: from the condemnation of Galileo by the Catholic Church in 17th century Italy, through the clashes between creationism and evolution in 20th century America, right up to recent claims that the universe does not need God.
Delving through the rich archive of programmes from Horizon and BBC Science, Thomas Dixon looks at what lies behind this difficult relationship. Using original footage from 1925, he tells the story of John Scopes, a Tennessee teacher who was tried for teaching evolution. He sees the connections between religion and American politics in the story of a more recent court case – the trial of Intelligent Design. He looks at what happens when new scientific discoveries start to explain events that were once seen as the workings of God, and explains how some of our most famous scientists have seen God in the grandest laws of the universe. Finally, he finds intriguing evidence from brain science which hints that belief in God is here to stay.
